The basics:
- NJ Transit debuts ‘Jersey Journeys’ interactive map of 150+ sites
- Features Revolutionary War landmarks, museums and monuments
- All destinations are accessible via rail, bus and light rail stations
- Supports the US’s 250th anniversary with tourism and education focus
In a bid to showcase New Jersey’s role in the nation’s founding, NJ Transit launched an interactive map to encourage exploration of key historic sites and landmarks across the state.
Available at njtransit.com/journeys, “Jersey Journeys: Every Stop Tells a Story” features more than 150 destinations located within walking distance of the agency’s bus, rail and light rail stations.
From Revolutionary War battlefields and colonial homes to cultural museums and monuments, the initiative seeks to make it easy to explore the state’s contributions to American history, NJ Transit said.
Just a few Revolutionary destinations include Fort Lee Historic Park, Hopper Gristmill Site, Monmouth Battlefield State Park, Jockey Hollow, Tea Burner’s Monument, Historic New Bridge Landing, Potter’s Tavern, Washington Crossing State Park, Cannon Ball House, Baylor Massacre Burial Site and the General Frelinghuysen House.
The itinerary also has places from other historical periods, like Skylands Manor, Salem Fire Museum, Branch Brook Park, Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park, Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal and The Palace of Depression.
‘Opening doors to discovery’
During an Aug. 26 kickoff event at the historic Liberty Hall Museum at Kean University’s campus in Union, NJ Transit President and CEO Kris Kolluri said, “This campaign highlights how rich a history New Jersey has that is only one rail, bus or light rail trip away. We’re proud to celebrate America’s upcoming 250th birthday by offering customers a way to experience New Jersey’s heritage through public transportation.”
Sen. Patrick Diegnan, D-18th District, praised the campaign as a “dynamic way of highlighting the rich history New Jersey has played in shaping our nation.”
Chair of Senate Transportation Committee, Diegnan added “People from all over the world will be able to experience iconic landmarks easily within reach of the NJ Transit system.”
Sen. Joseph Cryan, D-20th District, remarked, “By raising awareness that historic sites are accessible via public transit, NJ Transit is opening doors to discovery, strengthening civic pride and advancing education right in our own backyard.”

Big picture
NJ Transit noted that the project supports the state’s broader efforts to honor America’s 250th anniversary next year while promoting local tourism, education and civic pride.
Jersey Journeys also adds to the agency’s growing set of resources to help residents and visitors alike take advantage of public transportation to enjoy everything New Jersey has to offer.

NJ Transit’s “Transit to Trails” provides similar travel planning information for over 40 parks in 21 New Jersey counties, while “Pizza & Pints” lets people plan trips to over 165 world-class pizzerias, breweries, wineries and distilleries in the state.
It also comes as the agency tries to improve its public image through a number of customer-focused initiatives as part of a long-term strategic plan.
Along with rolling out a communications campaign centered on better engagement, real-time alerts and more effective announcements, NJ Transit is allocating $4 billion to upgrade infrastructure and improve facilities.
NJ Transit also has new leadership. Kolluri took the helm of the agency in January after Kevin Corbett departed. He previously served as CEO of the developer behind the new $16 billion Hudson River rail tunnel project as well as state transportation commissioner.
