A long vacant historic school in Atlantic County has been sold to a development company that plans to restore and convert the building into residential units.
The Hamilton Township School District announced the sale of the nearly century-old Duberson School in a statement Thursday.
Duberson Lofts LLC, an affiliate of Odin Properties, plans to preserve the character of the landmark building, which is listed on both the National and State Registers of Historic Places, district officials said.
The building originally opened in 1927-1928 as Mays Landing High School.
The building was renamed in 1972 to honor J. Harold Duberson, who served as a longtime vice president of the Hamilton Township Board of Education.
The building has been vacant since 2005 when it ceased operating as a school, but it remains a significant landmark in the Mays Landing community, the school district said.
The sale also includes the Mays Landing Water Works building, a one-story brick structure that likely dates to 1907 and originally served as a pump station.
“We are excited to see the Duberson School building restored and once again serving the community,” Nanci Barr, Hamilton Township School Board president, said in a statement.
Dr. Nelson, a township committee member and former Hamilton Township Board of Education president, emphasized the project’s dual significance. “This project represents both a preservation of our past and an investment in our future,” he said.
