Time is running out to visit the powerful Veterans and Athletes United (VAU) Fallen Heroes Memorial currently on display at the Rifle Camp Park in Woodland Park.
The memorial, which opened to the public on Friday, will remain at the park through Sept. 23, giving residents and visitors, one more day to experience the moving tribute to more than 7,000 service members who lost their lives during the Global War on Terror.
Open 24 hours a day, the exhibit contains thousands of carefully arranged dog tags that each represent a fallen hero. Thirteen of those dog tags honor service members from Passaic County.
“The Fallen Heroes Memorial is a powerful and humbling reminder of the sacrifices made for our freedom,” said Commissioner Deputy-Director Sandi Lazzara. “It is our privilege to host this tribute here in Passaic County and to invite the community to come reflect and honor those who gave their all.”
Hosted by the Passaic County Board of County Commissioners, the traveling Memorial has made stops across the country. Its presence in Passaic County offers a rare opportunity for locals to connect personally with the legacies of the fallen and show support for Gold Star families and veterans.
A formal ceremony took place Saturday morning, featuring remarks from local officials, veterans’ organizations, and Congresswoman Nellie Pou. Hundreds gathered under the gray skies and the show of gratitude and unity.
Visitors can still view the exhibit before it leaves town. The memorial is open to the public, rain or shine, through Tuesday.
