The winds they are a changing the weather for southeastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
There are no frost watches in Berks, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery or Philadelphia counties yet, but there are freeze watches just a little to the north in the Lehigh Valley — in Carbon, Lehigh, Monroe and Northampton counties — and in Sussex and Warren counties in New Jersey.
“A strong cold front will pass through the region today, then much cooler high pressure will build into the area through the end of the week,” stated the National Weather Service forecast synopsis issued by the Mount Holly office, which covers southeastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey. “The high pressure will shift offshore by Saturday, then a coastal storm will impact the region by Sunday and into early next week.”
Northwest winds will produce gusts of 25-30 mph this afternoon, and the highs will only top out in the mid-60s to low 70s, the NWS forecast for the regions said. Winds should die down to 10-15 mph tonight as another cold front moves through.
The low temperatures tonight will be mainly in the 40s, with 50s along the coast, and mid- to upper 30s in the higher terrain, and the winds should prevent frost from forming in most areas, the forecast stated.
Thursday is predicted to be the coolest day of the season so far, with the high struggling to reach 60, the NWS said. That night, low temperatures in the low to mid-30s for areas northwest of the I-95 urban corridor can be expected.
“Sheltered valleys north of I-78 are forecast to experience their first freeze of the season,” the Thursday night forecast said.
“For the long-term period over the weekend and into early next week, the main feature of interest will be the development of a potentially significant coastal storm near the North Carolina coast along a stalled frontal boundary,” according to the NWS. “This storm is anticipated to strengthen and lift northward Sunday into early next week.”
