Former Vice President Kamala Harris just defended former President Joe Biden despite her scathing criticism of him in her new book.
Harris appeared on comedian Jon Stewart’s latest podcast episode, released Thursday, to discuss her book “107 Days” and the state of the Democratic Party. She addressed her division with Biden, explaining that his initial decision to run for reelection was separate from his capability to serve as president.
“I did not fully understand how big of an issue it was for some people, for me to distinguish myself from it. I felt that the distinction between he and I was pretty clear… I think that was something that was a real issue,” Harris said on “The Weekly Show.”
She then defended Biden, prompting a shocked reaction from Stewart.
“I’m not talking about competence. I’m not talking about competence at all. No, I believe he was fully competent to serve,” Harris said.
“Do you really?” Stewart asked.
“Yes, I do,” Harris responded.
“That surprises me actually,” Stewart said.
Harris then explained that “there’s a distinction to be made between running for president and being president.”
“Well, being a candidate for President of the United States is about being in a marathon at a sprinter’s pace, having tomatoes thrown at you every step you take,” Harris said.
She then noted that she had a “complicated relationship” with Biden, adding that he “disappointed” her. Despite her criticism, she said Biden called her for her birthday last week and they had a “really great” conversation.
“I mean, like I said, it’s complicated. I care a great deal about Joe Biden, and I know he cares about me, and that’s not going to change,” she said.
Her comments come about a month after the release of her book sent shockwaves across the Democratic base. In her book, she alleged it was “recklessness” for Biden to run for reelection, saying his choice “should have been more than a personal decision.”
