Senate President Nicholas Scutari and Majority Leader Teresa Ruiz were re-elected to third terms today without opposition in an upper house where Democrats have a 25-15 majority.
“We face enormous challenges, but I believe we possess the ability to meet these challenges and build upon the progress we have achieved on behalf of the people of New Jersey,” Scutari said. “With strong Democratic majorities in both houses, we will work with Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill to move the state forward.”
Scutari had been the longtime Judiciary Committee chairman when Senate President Steve Sweeney unexpectedly lost his Senate seat in 2021. Ruiz became the majority leader at the same time, following the retirement of Loretta Weinberg.
“Together with Senate President Scutari and our Democratic Caucus, we stand ready to build a policy framework that expands opportunity, strengthens affordability, and improves the quality of life for every family who calls New Jersey home,” stated Ruiz.
The full 40-member State Senate is up for re-election in 2027.
