U.S. Senator Andy Kim is taking sides in the Jersey City mayoral election, endorsing Councilman James Solomon in the December 2 runoff against former Gov. James E. McGreevey.
“James represents a new generation of leadership. His winning the most number of votes in the general election shows the energy he built going into the runoff on December 2,” said Kim. “James is a principled public servant and a dedicated father whom I’ve known for years, and I trust him to fight alongside me for transparency, affordability, and opportunity. “
Kim hinted at the contrast between Solomon, a two-term progressive councilman from the city’s burgeoning downtown ward, and McGreevey, who served as governor from 2002 to 2004.
“For too long, politics in New Jersey has been an exclusive club,” Kim stated. “Now is the time to change that.”
Solomon finished first in this week’s non-partisan municipal election with 18,339 votes (29%) to McGreevey’s 15,760 (25%) in a seven-candidate field.
Last year, Solomon backed Kim in his bid for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate. Solomon filed an amicus brief in support of Kim’s lawsuit to eliminate the county organization line.
Steve Fulop did not seek re-election after twelve years in office.
