In his bid for re-election, at-large Jersey City Councilman Danny Rivera has joined the campaign slate of former Gov. Jim McGreevey.
McGreevey faces Jersey City Councilman James Solomon in the runoff for the mayorship.
Rivera had initially run on a ticket with Hudson County Commissioner Bill O’Dea, who ran for mayor but missed the runoff with a third-place finish. Rivera’s allyship with McGreevey is a split from O’Dea — the commissioner endorsed Solomon earlier this week. All three of Solomon’s Council running mates reached the next stage of the runoff, leaving no spots for new allies.
“Danny Rivera represents the heart and soul of Jersey City, steady, compassionate leadership grounded in community,” McGreevey said. “He’s worked tirelessly to improve public safety, expand youth programs, and deliver real help to families in need. His deep commitment to our Puerto Rican and Hispanic communities reflects the cultural pride and civic strength that make Jersey City extraordinary.”
Solomon and McGreevey face off in a Dec. 2 runoff; Solomon received about 29% of the vote, while McGreevey received about 25%. The winner will succeed Mayor Steve Fulop, who instead ran for governor.
“The Puerto Rican and Hispanic communities are the heartbeat of Jersey City,” Rivera said in the announcement. “Our culture, faith, and hard work have shaped this city’s identity. I’m proud to stand with Team McGreevey in continuing to deliver results, safer streets, affordable housing, and opportunities for every family.”
