State Sen. Andrew Zwicker (D-South Brunswick) said he’s still mulling a congressional run to succeed the retiring Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-Ewing) in New Jersey’s 12th congressional district.
The six-term congresswoman announced she would not seek re-election last month, and Zwicker is on the list of Democrats who were seen as potential successors. Zwicker told the New Jersey Globe on Monday that he is still discussing a potential run with his family.
Declared candidates seeking the seat include Assemblywoman Verlina Reynolds-Jackson, Plainfield Mayor Adrian Mapp, Somerset County Commissioner Shanel Robinson, and East Brunswick Mayor Brad Cohen.
State Sen. Patrick Diegnan (D-South Plainfield) endorsed Cohen earlier Monday, even while Zwicker, a fellow Middlesex County Democrat, continues to mull his options.
In 2014, before his time in the statehouse, Zwicker ran for the 12th congressional district, but finished fourth in the Democratic primary won by Watson Coleman. Zwicker’s district includes parts of Middlesex, Somerset, and Mercer counties.
Zwicker said he expects a bill he authored to adjust the timeline for special elections to clear the Legislature by the end of the lame-duck session.
