The Mets have been linked to Tigers ace Tarik Skubal in a potential trade scenario as they look to bolster their rotation this offseason
On Monday, Detroit president of baseball operations Scott Harris confirmed that the team will be “listening” and “exploring” options for the back-to-back AL Cy Young Award winner, as well as other players in the organization.
“I’ve been pretty clear since I’ve been here,” Harris said, via The Athletic. “I don’t believe in untouchables at any level. So anyone in our organization, at any level. It’s not a commentary on Tarik specifically. Sort of a blanket team-building approach. I think I can’t do my job without listening. I can’t do my job without exploring anything that may or may not have legs. Some are maybe very likely moves, and some are going to be extremely unlikely. But you can’t actually fully vet those opportunities unless you are willing to listen. So that’s how we’re doing it.”
It was expected that the Tigers, who reached the ALDS this season, would likely want to make Skubal available in trade discussions. With Scott Boras as his agent, Skubal is unlikely to give the Tigers a discount or even sign before he reaches free agency.
In 2025, Skubal, 29, was 13-6 with a 2.21 ERA through 31 starts with 241 strikeouts over 195 1/3 innings. He won the AL Cy Young Award this year.
In an appearance on “Foul Territory” last month, Skubal acknowledged the trade talks.
“At the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter,” he said. “It’s not going to impact who I am on a day-to-day basis. It’s not going to impact the way I work out or the way I’m going to throw and prepare to get my body ready to go for another season.”
