State Sen. Gordon Johnson (D-Englewood) intends to run for re-election in 2027, he told the New Jersey Globe on Monday. Johnson, who turns 76 on Tuesday, represented Bergen County in the Assembly for 20 years before winning election to the Senate in 2021.
He said that in the lame duck, he plans to speak with legislative leadership about passing the Immigrant Trust Act, a bill that would prohibit law enforcement from stopping an individual based on their immigration status or suspected violations of federal immigration law.
His districtmates, Assemblywoman Shama Haider (D-Tenafly) and Ellen Park (D-Englewood Cliffs), won a crowded primary election in June and rolled to re-election last month.
Johnson introduced the bill in the Senate, but Gov.-elect Mikie Sherrill has said she wouldn’t sign it into law, saying it could endanger existing protections.
“All I can do is try to get my leadership here to support it,” Johnson said.
