Two former local elected officials in Summit, former Council President Marjorie Fox and former Councilwoman Phyllis Sank, have endorsed Navy veteran Rebecca Bennett’s campaign for New Jersey’s 7th congressional district, as has Summit community leader Jeffrey Naiman.
“Rebecca’s strong leadership skills, work ethic and her willingness to listen and collaborate make her the strongest candidate to win and hold our Congressional seat,” Fox said in a statement. “As a former elected official in Summit, I know how important it is to have a member of Congress who will work to support and bring resources to communities throughout the district. Rebecca will be a determined leader who will deliver.”
Fox held her council seat from 2017 until her retirement in 2023, while Sank was appointed to a vacant seat in 2023 and left office that same year. Bennett had also previously received an endorsement from former Summit Mayor Jordan Glatt, who served from 2003 to 2011.
The crowded Democratic field to take on Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (R-Westfield) no longer has any local Summit candidates running; former Summit Councilman and local Democratic municipal chair Greg Vartan ended his campaign earlier this week and will instead coordinate the Union County Democratic organization’s endorsement process in the district.
