Hamilton Township Committeewoman Tracy Thompson has endorsed former USAID official Bayly Winder in New Jersey’s 2nd congressional district, another noteworthy Atlantic County endorsement as Winder seeks the Democratic nomination against Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-Dennis).
“Families in our community are living through a real cost-of-living crisis, and we can’t afford business-as-usual politics anymore,” Thompson, who won a competitive race for an unexpired township committee term in November, said in a statement. “Too many people are struggling just to get by while we keep doing the same thing over and over. It’s time for a change, and Bayly understands that urgency. He’s ready to fight for working people, not the status quo.”
Winder is competing against three other Democrats for the nomination in the Republican-leaning South Jersey district, with his chief opponent likely being civil rights attorney Tim Alexander, an unsuccessful candidate for the same seat in 2022 and 2024.
Alexander picked up an endorsement from Atlantic County Democratic chairman Michael Suleiman earlier this month, an important get for him in the district’s largest county. Winder, though, has made an effort to show that Suleiman’s endorsement (which was made in his personal capacity) isn’t the end of the story in Atlantic County, publicizing endorsements from Thompson and from two Pleasantville councilmembers.
