The basics:
- Whole Foods Market opens first Daily Shop location in New Jersey
- 4,851-square-foot Hoboken store focuses on grab-and-go shopping
- Store features products from 250+ Northeast suppliers, including NJ brands
Whole Foods Market has brought its small-format concept to New Jersey.
Designed for grab-and-go shopping, the newly opened 4,851-square-foot Whole Foods Market Daily Shop at 101 Washington St. in Hoboken offers fresh produce, meat, seafood, seasonal baked items, prepared meals and pantry essentials from over 250 Northeast-based suppliers.
Featured products at the store include New Jersey brands, such as Hoboken Farms pasta sauce and Undercover Snacks quinoa crisps, the chain noted. Shoppers can also find products under the 365 by Whole Foods Market label, according to the Amazon.com-owned natural and organic food chain.
With a much smaller square footage than the 530-plus traditional stores Whole Foods operates across the U.S., the company’s urban-oriented grocery store format seeks to give customers a convenient place to purchase fresh, high-quality ingredients.
At the Daily Shop, Amazon Prime members have access to year-round benefits, including discounts on select products each week and an additional 10% off hundreds of in-store sale items. Also, customers can pay in-store with their palm using Amazon One or with the Whole Foods Market or Amazon app.
According to the chain, some of the top-selling items at its existing Daily Shop outposts include berries, grapes and avocados. Ready-to-eat foods, such as rotisserie chicken, are a major draw as well, Whole Foods said.
From bank to pharmacy to grocery
Since unveiling its Daily Shop design in March 2024, the chain has opened three locations in New York City and one in Arlington, Va. After Hoboken, Whole Foods expects to add a site in Brooklyn, N.Y., early next year.
In Hoboken, Whole Foods took over a historic bank property that most recently served as a Walgreens. It’s been vacant since November 2023, when the retail pharmacy chain closed dozens of stores nationwide in an effort to reset its struggling business.
The location also expands Whole Foods’ footprint in Hudson County. The chain already has full-fledged marketplaces in downtown Jersey City and at Lincoln Harbor in Weehawken.
Following the Dec. 18 grand opening, Whole Foods Market Daily Shop is open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
Commenting on the launch, store team leader Victor Luciano said, “Opening our first store in Hoboken is an exciting milestone, and we’re grateful for the warm welcome from the neighborhood. We look forward to providing the community with great service, grocery essentials that meet our high quality standards and quick grab and go meals to make their lives easier.”
As part of an ongoing commitment to supporting local communities, Whole Foods said it is making donations to area organizations, including The Hoboken Shelter and Hoboken Community Center.
