Saker ShopRites is preparing to launch a brand-new ShopRite in Ocean County.
Located at 733 Route 72 W. Manahawkin, the 116,000-square-foot supermarket is reportedly scheduled to open Feb. 4, according to the Asbury Park Press.
At Manahawkin Commons, ShopRite takes over a space that has been vacant since Kmart closed in 2017.
The upcoming store will replace an existing 70,000-square-foot ShopRite located less than a mile away at Stafford Square Mall.
The current store is also among the seven ShopRite supermarkets that the Saker family acquired in 2021 from the Perlmutter family. Both grocers were also among the first members of Wakefern Food Corp.
With a footprint that includes 40 grocery stores across Monmouth, Ocean, Somerset, Middlesex, Mercer and Somerset counties, the fifth-generation, family-owned business is one of the largest supermarket operators in New Jersey. It’s also the biggest stakeholder in Keasbey-based Wakefern.
And, its workforce of 10,255 strong just placed the Holmdel-headquartered company at the top of NJBIZ’s ranking of family-owned businesses by number of workers.
In a recent statement about the relocation, Saker ShopRites President and CEO Richard Saker said, “We’re excited about moving the ShopRite of Manahawkin into a new location and look forward to continuing to serve the local community.”
The grand opening comes about two years after Saker ShopRites purchased Manahawkin Commons for a reported $36.5 million from Baltimore-based privately held commercial real estate investment firm MCB Real Estate LLC.
Other tenants at the320,000-square-foot shopping center include Michaels, Staples and T.J. Maxx.
It’s not known who will move into ShopRite’s space at Stafford Square Mall. Pasbjerg Development Co., the plaza’s broker, has the store listed as available in February.
