The basics:
- NY Giants name Super Bowl-winning coach John Harbaugh 21st head coach
- Harbaugh leaves Baltimore after 18 seasons and championship run
- New coach signs 5-year deal; will report directly to ownership
- Hire signals major reset after years of on-field struggles
Jan. 20 marked a pivotal day in the history of the storied New York Football Giants franchise.
After nearly a decade of underperformance and underwhelming play, the franchise signaled its next chapter with a marquee hire: John Harbaugh will serve as the 21st head coach in team history.
Harbaugh, 63, spent 18 seasons as the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens, leading the team to the Super Bowl XLVII title. He also notched 180 regular season wins in Baltimore – the 14th most in NFL history – along with 12 playoff berths across his tenure, including six division titles, four AFC Championship Game appearances and the Super Bowl.
Harbaugh’s 13 postseason victories tie for seventh in NFL history, second to Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid among active coaches.
He is regarded as one of the top coaches in the league. His exit from Baltimore earlier this month triggered a rush of demand for teams with vacant head coaching positions — and even among some teams who had a coach under contract who gauged his interest.
The Giants fired Brian Daboll midway through the 2025 season after a 2-8 start. Interim coach Mike Kafka replaced him, who went 2-5 at the helm, en route to a disappointing 4-13 season.
Team effort
The Giants were already in the midst of their coaching search and process. As soon as Harbaugh hit the market, the organization put on a full-court press. Ownership and team officials expressed immediate interest in the coach’s services. Fans on social media and beyond also adamantly expressed their desire for the team to go all-in on Harbaugh.
Former Giants coach and two-time Super Bowl champion Tom Coughlin; quarterback Eli Manning; and even Harbaugh’s father, Jack, a longtime coach who stressed the team’s history and tradition to his son, all boosted the team’s push with endorsements of Harbaugh.
Following a Jan. 14 meeting in East Rutherford, which included a now-legendary dinner at Elia Mediterranean Restaurant, reports first surfaced early Jan. 15 that Harbaugh and the Giants were finalizing a contract for him to become the team’s next head coach. Putting Giants fans on pins and needles, the process ended up taking until Jan. 17 to complete.
5-year, $100M contract
But all worries were laid to rest Jan. 17, as the team officially announced Harbaugh’s hiring.
The coach will receive a five-year contract for $100 million, plus bonuses, as well as commitments from ownership about investments for certain areas of the program and infrastructure.

And for the first time in franchise history, the head coach will report directly to the owner, as Harbaugh did in Baltimore, instead of to General Manager Joe Schoen.
“We are proud to name John Harbaugh as the next head coach of the New York Giants,” said John Mara, team president, in a Jan. 17 press release. “Joe Schoen presented us an outstanding group of candidates, which allowed us to be deliberate and confident in this decision.
“Through numerous conversations, John consistently stood out for his conviction and vision for leading a winning organization, and we welcome him and his family to the Giants,” Mara continued.
‘A proven winner’
“John is a proven winner whose teams are disciplined, resilient, and prepared,” said Giants Chairman Steve Tisch. “His passion for the game, his ability to connect with players, and his experience leading at the highest level made him an outstanding fit for us, and we’re excited to move forward together.”
Schoen echoed those sentiments. He stressed that Harbaugh stood out for his clarity, competitiveness and approach to building a sustainable winning program.
That is something the Giants fans are yearning for. The team has gone 53-107-1 since the 2016 season, following the departure of Coughlin. During that stretch, the Giants posted just one winning season (2016) and just one playoff win. They have not won a division title since 2011.
Over the span, the team has had six head coaches (two interim) between Coughlin and now Harbaugh.
“He has a strong track record of developing players, building cohesive staffs, and setting a clear standard of accountability,” said Schoen. “We are excited to work with John in moving this team in the right direction.”
Family business
“I want to thank John Mara, Steve Tisch, Chris Mara, and Joe Schoen for the opportunity to lead the New York Giants,” said Harbaugh. “To serve as this franchise’s head coach is a tremendous honor. I come from a football family, and I have deep respect for the history and tradition of this organization.
“I’m excited to begin assembling our staff and getting to work building our team. I would like to sincerely thank Steve Bisciotti and the Baltimore Ravens organization for 18 remarkable years, including the opportunity to become a head coach in the National Football League. My family and I are grateful for the welcome we’ve already felt, and we look forward to becoming part of the Giants family.”

Welcome, Coach
The Giants officially introduced Harbaugh during a Jan. 20 press conference at the organization’s headquarters in East Rutherford.
“It’s obviously an exciting time for the New York Giants – as we’re set to introduce our next head football coach,” said Schoen at the Jan. 20 presser. “When we set out, we were looking for a proven winner and an elite leader. We’re fortunate we were able to find both.”
Local players

Several well-known New Jersey brands will take center stage at the Feb. 8 Super Bowl LX. Here’s a sneak peek.
As Schoen ticked off Harbaugh’s resume, he described him as a proven winner.
“When we set out to do this, we knew that John was going to be the perfect person for the New York Giants,” said Schoen. “When we did our research, what continually came up was John’s respect that the players had for him and the ability to develop young men. With that being said, I would like to introduce to you the next head football coach for the New York Giants, John Harbaugh.”
“What an honor, what an exciting moment,” said Harbaugh. “They say New York’s a different kind of place. I would say it’s probably true, man. This is pretty amazing right here. This is incredible to see those players back there. Seeing those guys smiling and ready to go to work. That gets me fired up, too.”
Molding players
Harbaugh has expressed his excitement for working with the new team, who despite the disappointing record have several, exciting young players, including:
- Quarterback Jaxson Dart
- Wide receive Malik Nabers
- Running backs Cam Skattebo and Tyrone Tracy
- Offensive tackle Andrew Thomas
- Edge rushers Brian Burns and Abdul Carter
And the Giants new head coach expressed his focus on bringing winning football back to this storied franchise, which has found itself on the losing side of the ledger far too often over the last decade.
“It’s a profound honor to be entrusted with the responsibility of coaching the New York Football Giants,” said Harbaugh. “My dad taught me that they were the New York Football Giants. They weren’t just the Giants – they were the New York Football Giants. All the way back – one of the most iconic franchises in all of sports.
“I wanted this job. I think I told you that, Mr. Mara, I wanted this job – to be on the biggest stage in the biggest sport,” Harbaugh said, continuing, “I know the challenges; I understand the expectations; I know the fans are hungry for a winner. We’re here with one mission – to become, to earn the right to be called, the world champions in New York.
“And that’s what we plan to do.”
