Amanda Anismova wanted to set the record straight.
One reporter at the Australian Open has been asking American tennis stars if the current state of the country under President Trump complicates their feelings of playing under the American flag.
While some stars like Coco Gauff gave frank answers, Anisimova, a New Jersey native who reached the Wimbledon and U.S. Open finals in 2025, initially declined to elaborate.
“I was born in America so I’m always proud to represent my country,” she said Jan. 22. “A lot of us are doing really well. It’s great to see a lot of great athletes on the women’s and men’s side.”
Pressed to elaborate on “everything that’s been happening in the U.S., Anisimova said, “I don’t think that’s relevant.”
After becoming one of four American women into the Australian Open quarterfinals along with Gauff, Jessica Pegula and Iva Jovic, Anisimova elaborated yet again.
“In my other press conference, the fact that I didn’t want to answer a question that was obviously intended for a headline and clickbait, that was my right,” she said. “It had nothing to do with my political views or anything like that. The fact that people assume that they know my stance on certain important topics is just wrong. It’s not factual. It’s tough but I’ve learned to get used to it.”
No. 4 Anisimova will next face No. 6 Pegula in the quarters on Tuesday.
