Wakefern Food Corp. is growing its ShopRite Supermarkets Inc. division in the Philadelphia region.
In a statement to NJBIZ, the Keasbey-based cooperative confirmed plans to acquire the following three ShopRite stores from longstanding family operators:
- ShopRite of West Chester (KTM Supermarkets)
- ShopRite of Whitman Plaza (Colligas Family Markets)
- ShopRite of Roosevelt Boulevard (McMenamin Family Markets)
All three transactions are expected to be completed this month. Financial terms of the deals were not disclosed.
After that, both the Miller and Colligas families will exit the grocery business entirely, according to Wakefern. Meanwhile, the McMenamins will continue to operate their ShopRite store at Morrell Plaza in Philadelphia. They’ll also run a ShopRite in Hatfield that the Millers recently sold to them, Wakefern said.
McMenamin Family Markets President Sean McMenamin has been Wakefern’s chairman since 2023.
Through its ShopRite Supermarkets division, Wakefern currently has 31 locations across New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.
Carrying on a tradition
ShopRite Supermarkets spokesperson Maureen Gillespie said, “SRS is excited to welcome these three locations and continue the tradition of exceptional service established by the Colligas, Miller and McMenamin families. We thank all three families for their years of dedication and service to the community.”
Supermarket News noted that ShopRite presently holds the leading market share in the Philadelphia market at 16.6%. Most of the ShopRite stores in the area are owned by Wakefern member Brown’s Super Stores.
The deals comes about three months after Wakefern acquired upscale New York City grocery chain Morton Williams. That followed the 2024 purchase of Di Bruno Bros., a Philadelphia-headquartered grocer known for gourmet foods, cheeses and cured meats.
Wakefern’s other banners include Price Rite Marketplace, The Fresh Grocer, Dearborn Market, Gourmet Garage and Fairway Market.
Its portfolio of hundreds of supermarkets covers New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island.
