Drew University received a $50,000 donation from the Garden State Initiative to support the New Jersey Governor’s School in the Sciences.
NJGSS is a three-week residential summer program for local high school students hosted annually on Drew’s Madison campus. The program immerses students in intensive, college-level scientific research.
New Jersey-based independent think tank and policy organization GSI focuses on advancing policy solutions that promote new investment, job growth, economic opportunity and innovation across the state.
The organization also administers the annual Governor Thomas Kean Leadership Award. The honor recognizes individuals who exemplify principled, collaborative and inclusive leadership, like the Garden State’s 48th governor. GSI hosted the Tom Kean Leadership Award Gala in September.
“Gov. Kean has long championed the idea that strong leadership begins with education and opportunity,” said Regina Egea, founder and chairwoman of GSI.
The donation was made in honor of GSI’s Kean Leadership Award. A formal presentation took place during a campus ceremony earlier this week.
School ties
“Drew University‘s role as home to the Governor’s School reflects that principle, and this contribution underscores our shared commitment to investing in students who will help shape New Jersey’s future through innovation, research, and public service,” said Egea.

“Drew University is proud to host the Governor’s School every summer,” said Drew University President Hilary Link. “This donation in honor of Gov. Kean will be so meaningful to further the students’ experiences as they learn new science and research skills and explore possible futures.”
In addition to the donation, GSI also created a plaque honoring Kean. The former governor also served as president of Drew from 1990–2005. The plaque will be installed in Drew’s Hall of Sciences. It will recognize Kean’s leadership as governor, chair of the 9/11 Commission and Drew president.
Because of Kean’s longstanding ties to the university, GSI selected Drew as the permanent home for the installation. Kean’s son, Reed, attended the dedication ceremony, reflecting on his father’s connection to the institution.
Each year, future recipients of the award will have their names added to the plaque.
