Gov. Mikie Sherrill nominated Kevin Jarvis to serve as the next commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Labor & Workforce Development. He would succeed longtime Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo.
If confirmed for the role, Jarvis will oversee:
- Workforce training and development initiatives
- Higher education and business partnerships and pathways
- Improvements to government service delivery
- Expanded career opportunities for individuals with disabilities
- Continued enforcement of worker protections
Jarvis brings a mix of legal, policy and executive experience. Most recently, he served as a partner at the law firm O’Brien, Belland & Bushinsky. There, he practiced labor law, handling contract negotiations, grievances and arbitration, unfair labor practice cases and ERISA litigation.
Department experience
Additionally, he previously served nearly four years as chief of staff at the labor department – the agency he is now poised to lead.
Sherrill cited Jarvis’s long-standing advocacy for workers’ rights as well as his familiarity with the NJDOL.
“I am thrilled to announce Kevin Jarvis as my pick to lead the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development. Kevin’s depth of experience advocating for the rights of New Jersey’s workers makes him an ideal candidate to serve as New Jersey’s Labor Commissioner,” said Sherrill. “As we look to create more opportunities for New Jerseyans to find great jobs and get ahead, Kevin’s experience will be invaluable in helping us strengthen resources available to our communities.”
Jarvis described the nomination as an honor and thanked Sherrill for putting her trust in him.
“New Jersey is the epicenter of innovation, and I look forward to working with Gov. Sherrill to cultivate a workforce ready to respond to our evolving employment landscape,” said Jarvis.
