Another job shakeup is hitting Walmart‘s Hoboken offices.
In a filing with the New Jersey Department of Labor & Workforce Development, the retail giant said it expects to eliminate or relocate 100 positions by May 1.
A spokesperson for Walmart told NJBIZ the jobs listed are mostly tied to an ongoing push to consolidate some workers at corporate sites. They said the company expects most workers to continue with the organization.
Walmart executives penned a Jan. 30 letter to the NJDOL and Hoboken Mayor Emily Jabbour. They said most relocations will move employees to the company’s home office in Bentonville, Ark., or offices in the San Francisco Bay area. Walmart also noted that some of the 100 impacted employees assigned to the Hoboken office work remotely.
The notice comes about nine months after the chain kicked off a broader restructuring effort aimed at streamlining operations. As part of that strategy, Walmart said it expected to lay off 1,500 corporate employees in the U.S.
The May 2025 announcement followed a request for workers at some smaller corporate sites to relocate to Walmart’s headquarters in Arkansas or offices in California. At the time, the company said changes came from a desire to consolidate its workforce and streamline operations.
‘Collaboration, innovation and speed’
The push came months after Walmart moved most of its corporate staffers in Dallas, Atlanta and Toronto. Workers went to either Bentonville, San Francisco or Hoboken. The transfer aimed to boost “collaboration, innovation and speed.”
Since February 2025, Walmart has flagged 668 positions in Hoboken in state WARN notices. It is unclear how many employees left the company or moved to a different Walmart corporate location over the past year.
A spokesperson for Walmart said the chain is committed to maintaining its presence in Hoboken. Additionally, they pointed to a project to upgrade the office at Waterfront Corporate Center, which expects to wrap up this year.
Walmart’s latest disclosure comes on the heels of layoffs from another major retailer. E-commerce Amazon notified it will cut more than 870 jobs in New Jersey as part of a sweeping organization change impacting 16,000 workers nationwide.
In the U.S., Walmart and Amazon are the nation’s largest private employers, with workforces of 1.6 million and 1.1 million, respectively.
Editor’s note: This story was updated at 4:17 p.m. Feb. 3, 2026, after a Walmart representative shared with NJBIZ that the changes will be position eliminations or relocations and not layoffs.
