President Donald Trump might be losing ground among the voters who love him most, according to a new poll.
A new poll analysis from Pew Research Center, published Tuesday, showed that white evangelical Protestants remain staunch supporters of Trump, with 69% approving of the way he is handling his job as president. However, the poll showed that white evangelicals are less supportive of Trump than they were at the start of his second term.
The poll found that 58% of white evangelicals said they supported all or most of Trump’s plans and policies. This is an 8-point drop from the 66% who said the same in February 2025, according to Pew Research Center.
White evangelicals were also less confident that Trump acts ethically while in office. Just 40% of white evangelicals are extremely or very confident that Trump acts ethically in office, which is a 15-point drop from when the survey was conducted in February 2025.
White evangelicals’ waning support of Trump echoes the general public’s shifting sentiments about the president. At the beginning of 2025, 35% of U.S. adults supported all or most of Trump’s policies. In comparison, the latest poll showed just 27% of U.S. adults supported all or most of Trump’s agenda.
The analysis also showed that support for Trump’s policies dropped across other religious groups since last year. According to Pew Research Center, white evangelicals are the only large religious group that shows a majority approval for Trump.
Here’s how Trump’s support has shifted across different religious groups:
- White Catholic: In January 2026, 46% support all or most of Trump’s policies. This is down from the 51% who said the same in February 2025.
- White Protestant, not evangelical: In January 2026, 33% support all or most of Trump’s policies. This is down from the 46% who said the same in February 2025.
- Hispanic Catholic: In January 2026, 18% support all or most of Trump’s policies. This is down from the 20% who said the same in February 2025.
- Religiously unaffiliated: In January 2026, 13% support all or most of Trump’s policies. This is down from the 20% who said the same in February 2025.
- Black Protestant: In January 2026, 6% support all or most of Trump’s policies. This is down from the 8% who said the same in February 2025.
The poll was conducted from Jan. 20 to Jan. 26 among 8,512 U.S. adults. It has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 1.4 percentage points.
The analysis was published at a notable moment, days after after Trump questioned why any religious person would vote for a Democrat.
“I don’t know how a person of faith can vote for a Democrat. I really don’t,” Trump said during his address at the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday.
“And I know we have some here today. I don’t know why they’re here because they certainly don’t give us their vote,” the president added.
White Protestants and Catholics tend to lean more Republican.
According to a 2024 report from the Pew Research Center, 59% of all Protestants are registered Republicans, including 85% of white evangelical Protestants. However, 84% of Black Protestants and 45% of Hispanic Protestants are registered Democrats.
Protestants remain the largest single religious group in the United States.
Just over half of Catholics are registered Republicans, including 61% of white Catholics; 44% of all Catholics and 60% of Hispanic Catholics are registered Democrats.
