The North Brunswick Train Station project reached a major milestone, with 60% design approval secured. NJ Transit has also authorized the Middlesex County Improvement Authority to move into Phase 3, the final engineering and design stage.
Officials say this next phase will advance the project toward 90% design completion. It will include finalized construction drawings detailing platforms, pedestrian bridges and structural elements.
County and local leaders praised the progress, calling the station a key component of Middlesex County’s Destination 2040 economic plan, which will improve commuter access and ease congestion along the Route 1 corridor.
MCIA has managed the project since 2020 through a partnership with NJ Transit. They also coordinate with multiple agencies and local officials to streamline the approval process.
“With each milestone, construction drawings become refined and finalized to bring this a step closer to getting shovels in the ground,” said MCIA Executive Director H. James Polos. “Our construction drawings depict items such as passenger platforms, the overhead pedestrian bridges, foundation elements, steel connections, and methods of structural support.”
“With the MCIA leading the North Brunswick Train Station, they have been able to streamline a very complicated and cumbersome approval process,” said Middlesex County Commissioner Director Ronald Rios. “Collaboration continues amongst all partners as we expeditiously move towards 90% design completion. Each milestone brings this vital transportation project a step closer to construction.”
Building the ‘future economy’
“The North Brunswick Train Station is a key component to the future economy of our County,” said MCIA Chairman James Nolan. “Once constructed, the station will also help manage traffic congestion along the Route 1 corridor and provide additional access for commuters in the region.”
North Brunswick Mayor Francis Womack expressed his gratitude to the county partners and key stakeholders for reaching this milestone.
“The residents of North Brunswick look forward to aggressive help and support from our federal and state legislators, as well as the continued faithful support of Middlesex County, as we seek the funds necessary to make sure the North Brunswick train station becomes a reality in the near future,” said Womack.
$50 million from the New Jersey Transportation Trust Fund backs the project. WSP USA serves as the design and engineering firm.
