Hudson County Democrats will support all local congressional Democrats for re-election this year, an unsurprising decision but one that grants several potentially vulnerable incumbents the backing of one of the state’s formidable county organizations.
U.S. Senator Cory Booker and Reps. Rob Menendez (D-Jersey City), Nellie Pou (D-North Haledon), and LaMonica McIver (D-Newark) all received the party’s backing. Hudson Democratic endorsements are decided by Democratic Chair Craig Guy and the county’s 12 mayors, but the party said no other candidates competed for support against the incumbents regardless.
Party endorsements for county office – all nine seats on the county commissioner board are up this year, and the county organization is at risk of losing some of them to insurgent challengers – are still to come.
Menendez, who had previously announced endorsements from key Democrats like Guy and Union City Mayor Brian Stack, faces a serious primary challenger in former Jersey City school board president Mussab Ali. Pou, meanwhile, is on a glide path in her primary, but she faces a more competitive general election in a Trump-won district.
“As Chairman of the Hudson County Democratic Organization, I was proud to endorse Nellie Pou in her first election for Congress, helping make history as she became the first Latina congresswoman in the State of New Jersey,” Guy said in a statement on Pou. “Since taking office, Congresswoman Pou has continued to demonstrate an unwavering commitment to the people she represents.”
