The basics:
- Rutgers creates Scarlet Knight Enterprises to oversee athletics business operations
- New entity will manage NIL deals, sponsorships, media rights, ticketing strategy
- Sports executive Oliver Luck named inaugural board chairman
- Initiative aims to grow revenue and strengthen Rutgers Athletics finances
Rutgers University has created Scarlet Knight Enterprises Inc. The new corporate entity is designed to manage and expand the business operations of Rutgers Athletics.
That includes multimedia rights, corporate partnerships, ticketing strategy and name, image and likeness initiatives. The university also announced March 3 that veteran sports executive Oliver Luck will serve as the inaugural chairman of the organization’s board of directors.
Rutgers Athletic Director Keli Zinn spearheads the initiative, which will absorb the structure of Scarlet Assets Management Co. The entity will hire a CEO to lead the enterprise. A board made up of sports and entertainment industry leaders will guide its strategy.
Goals
Rutgers officials said the move is intended to modernize the athletic department’s commercial operations. It also aims to generate new revenue streams to support student-athletes as well as long-term program growth.
Scarlet Knight Enterprises will also centralize the athletic department’s most valuable commercial assets into a single, purpose-driven entity.
“The creation … is a pivotal step for Rutgers Athletics,” Zinn said in a March 3 press release.
“College athletics is evolving rapidly, and we have a responsibility to be proactive in how we structure our business operations to grow and diversify our revenue,” she continued. “We are building a modern, innovative business model that allows us to maximize opportunities, compete aggressively in the marketplace and generate new resources that directly benefit our student-athletes and fans.”
Scarlet Knight Enterprises will:
- Oversee Rutgers’ multimedia and naming rights
- Develop corporate sponsorships
- Expand marketing and digital engagement
- Operate as a NIL marketing agency to connect student-athletes with brands and business opportunities
- Expand commercial revenue streams
University leaders said the structure is designed to better position Rutgers in the changing landscape of college athletics as well as within the Big Ten Conference.
It’s a business
“I am excited to partner with Keli Zinn and the Rutgers leadership team as they position the university to thrive in today’s evolving college athletics landscape,” said Luck. “Scarlet Knight Enterprises reflects a forward-looking, strategic approach to the business of college athletics, one designed to drive growth, strengthen partnerships, and generate meaningful support for student-athletes.
“With strong leadership from Director Zinn and President [William] Tate, Rutgers is building a model that will deliver long-term sustainability and success.”

“Oliver’s appointment as Chairman and an inaugural board member speaks directly to the momentum and competitive focus behind Scarlet Knight Enterprises,” said Zinn. “His leadership across professional and collegiate sports in building modern revenue models positions Rutgers to elevate our trajectory in a rapidly evolving landscape. I’m grateful he is helping lead this effort from the very beginning.”
Rutgers Athletics reported a record $78 million deficit in January, according to NJ.com. The Scarlet Knight Enterprises launch comes as part of a broader effort by Zinn to strengthen the department’s long-term financial model and competitiveness. She became athletic director last August.
