Tiffany Glenn Burress, an attorney and the wife of ex-New York Giants star Plaxico Burress, is emerging as a potential candidate against Rep. Nellie Pou (D-North Haledon) in the 9th congressional district.
If Burress were to enter the race, it would add an unpredictable new dimension to the race for the Paterson-based 9th district, which – despite being one of 13 districts nationwide in 2024 that elected a House Democrat while voting for Donald Trump – has yet to attract a huge amount of national attention or fundraising.
Burress’s interest in the race was first reported yesterday by Inside Elections.
A native of Pennsylvania and a former college track star, Burress works at the New Jersey law firm of Brandon J. Broderick as a workers’ compensation and personal injury attorney. She lives in Totowa (a Passaic County suburb located a few miles outside the boundaries of the 9th district) with her husband, who spent 14 seasons in the NFL, including four with the Giants and one with the Jets.
Burress has never run for elected office before, nor has she been publicly involved in politics, though Inside Elections did note that the Jersey Journal spotted her at a Hudson GOP fundraiser in 2014.
Two other Republicans are already running for the 9th district: Billy Prempeh, an Air Force veteran who has been the GOP nominee for the same district in every cycle since 2020, and Clifton Councilwoman Rosie Pino.
But any Republican nominee will likely have an uphill fight against Pou, a former state legislator elected last year following the death of Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-Paterson). Although the district voted for Trump in 2024, it has historically been far more Democratic, and it returned to those roots in this year’s governor’s race, supporting Democratic Gov.-elect Mikie Sherrill by nearly 20 percentage points.
