Von Maur Department Stores is making its New Jersey debut.
Scheduled to open in fall 2027 at Freehold Raceway Mall in Freehold, the three-level, 164,000-square-foot store will offer a mix of brand-name and specialty apparel, shoes, accessories and gifts. It will also feature the retailer’s “hallmark residential ambiance” that includes plush furnishings, an open floor plan and live music from a grand piano, Von Maur said in a statement.
Named “America’s Best Department Store” by Newsweek for the past four years, Von Maur is also popular with consumers for its customer service, robust rewards program, interest-free charge card and complimentary services such as gift wrapping and shipping.
At the Route 9 shopping center, Von Maur will be an anchor tenant in a space that has been vacant since Nordstrom closed in 2020. Nordstrom was among 16 stores nationwide that reportedly shuttered due to the pandemic’s effects on business.
Founded 153 years ago in Davenport, Iowa, the family-owned retailer now has nearly 40 stores across the U.S.
As part of an ongoing expansion, Von Maur recently opened its first locations in Pennsylvania and North Dakota. It is also continuing a multi-year, $100 million renovation effort across existing stores.
Creating 150 jobs
Jim von Maur, president and fourth-generation leader of the brand, said he was thrilled to bring “the Von Maur experience to Central New Jersey.”
“Freehold Raceway Mall is the area’s premier shopping destination, and we look forward to joining its vibrant retail community. As we continue to expand across the country, this new location represents an exciting milestone for our company,” he said.
According to Von Maur, the upcoming outpost will employ 150 full- and part-time associates.
This technically marks the second store at Macerich-owned Freehold Raceway Mall for Von Maur.
Earlier this year, the company’s trend-driven young women’s apparel and accessories chain Dry Goods USA opened at the shopping center. Von Maur’s efforts to grow that brand also include the launch of a Dry Goods shop at Cherry Hill Mall in Cherry Hill.
Macerich President and CEO Jack Hsieh remarked, “Von Maur is a best-in-class anchor that serves as a catalyst for our Freehold center and underscores our commitment to bring elevated brands that complement our retail mix. Von Maur’s addition reinforces Macerich’s Path Forward strategy to deliver new anchor tenants that have clearly demonstrated the ability to drive traffic and sales across a property.”
