As an elder who has spent decades in leadership, governance, and organizational management—and as someone who genuinely loves this city and its people—I offer these thoughts in the spirit of guidance, not criticism. When you care deeply about a community, you want to see it led well and protected from unintended harm.
It is encouraging to see young people step forward with a desire to serve Trenton. Their energy, ideas, and commitment are important. The community’s willingness to support them reflects a shared hope for something better.
At the same time, love alone is not enough.
The role of mayor is complex and demanding. It involves stewarding a multi-million-dollar operation—overseeing budgets, departments, contracts, labor relations, infrastructure, and compliance—while delivering real results for residents who have endured years of instability.
Readiness means understanding how budgets work, how priorities are set, and how waste is reduced. It means knowing how to build and assess a capable leadership team based on competence and accountability. It also requires experience with strategy, organizational development, and quality systems that help prevent problems rather than simply respond to them.
Equally important is critical thinking.
Critical thinking is the ability to pause, ask hard questions, and honestly assess one’s preparation. It helps distinguish between the desire to lead and the readiness to govern. Without this discipline, even sincere efforts can fall short of the city’s needs.
If there is concern that current leadership has not delivered, then real change requires more than new faces—it requires preparation and capacity. Otherwise, we risk repeating the same outcomes under a different banner.
Loving Trenton means being willing to prepare before seeking the responsibility to lead it. Our city deserves leadership equal to the complexity of its challenges.
