The 22-year-old left shot defenseman exited the game halfway through the second period. He did not return. NHL insider Frank Seravalli reported that the initial diagnosis was a dislocated shoulder for Hughes.
“Will await word from Devils postgame and potential timeline as he continues to be evaluated,” Seravalli wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Coach Sheldon Keefe provided an update on Hughes after the game.
“He is going to have to get evaluated,” said Keefe. “He is going to miss time, for sure. We won’t see him for the rest of his road trip. We will get him evaluated and determine the length of time from there.”

The Devils face the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night. The team has seven defensemen on its roster, including Hughes. They have three games remaining on their Western road trip.
Watch for Johnathan Kovacevic — who did not play Monday — to rejoin the lineup on Tuesday. A defenseman will likely have to play on their off side.
Hughes, who signed a massive 7-year contract this summer, has 26 points (five goals, 21 assists) this season.
