Former New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin returns to private practice with the launch of a new law firm.
Platkin and a team of senior litigators from the AG’s office founded Platkin LLP in Newark. The team has handled high-stakes litigation involving public corruption, corporate accountability, gun safety, emerging tech and the Trump administration.
Billed as a “mission-driven law firm,” Platkin LLP is built to “step in where others step back,” according to a press release announcing the launch. The firm brings “high-impact, precedent-setting cases that protect the public and strengthen the rule of law.”
Platkin said the firm operates with a mission to “hold the world’s most powerful corporations and institutions accountable when they break the law and harm the public.”
Built for the moment
After graduating from Stanford Law School, Platkin began his legal career at Debevoise & Plimpton LLP in New York. The New Jersey native then went on to serve as policy director for former Gov. Phil Murphy’s gubernatorial campaign from 2016–2017. Platkin also held a post as chief counsel to the Murphy administration between 2018 to 2020.
Platkin also spent two years as a partner at Lowenstein Sandler LLP’s white collar and business litigation groups. He assumed the post as the state’s 62nd attorney general in 2022.
As AG, Platkin spearheaded over 40 lawsuits against the Trump administration. Cases included multi-state actions challenging issues like environmental protections, gun reform, federal funding cuts and firings.
“In big moments that call for decisive action, I have never been one to sit on the sidelines, not as Attorney General and not now,” he said. “During my tenure as Attorney General, I used the law to drive meaningful change in the face of injustice. Now, through high-stakes litigation and investigations, we will continue to fight against powerful wrongdoers to protect residents, communities, and democracy. Platkin LLP is built for this very moment.”
Platkin LLP also includes:
• Partner Angela Cai, a seasoned appellate advocate and former deputy solicitor general of New Jersey who helped build the office into an elite practice
• Partner Ravi Ramanathan, the inaugural director of New Jersey’s SAFE office. Ramanathan led the nation’s first state-level civil firearms enforcement program
• Counsel Aaron Haier, former senior counsel to the AG
• Executive Assistant Jaeliaya Troche, who previously provided high-level executive support at the state Attorney General Office
Platkin LLP’s practice areas include impact litigation, complex civil litigation, appeals, independent investigations, monitorships and crisis management.
The firm said it seeks to handle a variety of cases, such as consumer protection, antitrust, securities, health care and environment. It seeks to serve a diverse base of clients, like governments, individuals, organizations, nonprofits and labor unions.
