The Department of Education released its initial proposals for school district funding this year, a total increase of $372 million from last year.
“The budget includes a record level of K-12 school funding, while acknowledging that much more work is needed to make sure students and taxpayers get the best return on our investment,” Gov. Mikie Sherrill said. “It lays the foundation for future improvements – like stronger academic and mental health outcomes, shared services, and more efficient spending – to better support children from birth through graduation and strengthen schools statewide.”
State Senate Minority Leader Anthony Bucco criticized the proposals, saying the 6% cap on increases prevents districts from recovering from cuts in previous years.
“The school funding formula is broken and the numbers released yesterday prove it,” he said. “The aid simply isn’t adequate. The 6 percent cap prevents districts from recovering from the millions of dollars they’ve lost over the years. Our school districts deserve a fair and equitable distribution of aid, but once again communities like Jefferson and West Milford are left to deal with significant shortfalls.”
