The state labor department released the August jobs report Sept. 18.
The data, produced by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, showed the Garden State added 4,900 jobs – while the unemployment rate ticked up 0.1 percentage point to 5% (the national rate is 4.3%).
Last month, four of the nine private industry sectors recorded gains, including:
- Professional and business services +7,300
- Private education and health services +1,700
- Leisure and hospitality +1,100
- Other services +800
Among private industry sectors, the biggest losses were seen in:
- Financial activities -1,400
- Construction -1,000
- Manufacturing -600
The public sector recorded a 2,100 job decrease in August.
The jobs report also noted a downward revision for July – from 7,500 jobs to a gain of 6,400 jobs.
The September jobs report will be released Oct. 16.
