The Latino Action Network, one of New Jersey’s largest Latino advocacy groups, endorsed Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) for governor on Thursday, saying she’ll invest in New Jersey’s children, support small businesses, and fight crime.
The group backed Gov. Phil Murphy in 2017 and 2021. The Latino Action Network split from the Latino Leadership Alliance after the latter endorsed former Gov. Chris Christie’s 2013 re-election bid. After splitting off, the Latino Action Network backed Democrat Barbara Buono’s unsuccessful campaign against Christie.
“Mikie Sherrill has a track record in Congress of fighting for our communities,” President Javier Robles said. “We know that she will bring that same commitment to the governor’s office. At a time when Donald Trump is waging unprecedented attacks on our community, we know that Congresswoman Sherrill will fight for us, ensuring that Black and Latino students have access to a quality education, expanding economic opportunities for our community and protecting the constitutional rights of every single New Jersey resident.”
In a statement, Sherrill said she will ensure minority-owned businesses receive a fair share of state contracts and that she will fully fund the state’s schools.
“I am deeply honored to earn the endorsement of the Latino Action Network and I look forward to working together to ensure that Trenton is delivering for Latino families across New Jersey,” Sherrill said. “As governor, I will fight for the investments our communities deserve.”
Sherrill faces Republican former Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli in the Nov. 4 gubernatorial election. Mail-in voting has already begun, and early, in-person voting begins Oct. 25.
