Ahead of National Coffee Day Sept. 29, popular chains are brewing up special promotions.
Several brands with a local presence – such as Dunkin’, Paris Baguette and 7-Eleven – announced freebies, discounts and deals to celebrate the food holiday.
Americans have plenty of reasons to celebrate National Coffee Day this year.
Nearly 195 million U.S. adults drink coffee every week, with the average coffee drinker downing 2.8 cups a day, according to the National Coffee Association. The report found that 83% of Americans who had coffee within the past day did so at home. That’s the highest amount since the NCA began tracking consumption trends in 2021.
Citing industry experts, Reuters noted that the pattern appears to be driven by the continuing trend of remote work and an increasing pullback in consumer spending. The outlet also pointed to the ability of home machines to deliver “near out-of-home quality” coffee.
Meanwhile, out-of-home consumption among coffee drinkers reached 38%. That’s the largest share since pre-pandemic January 2020. Of those consumers, 55% ordered their drink at a drive-thru. And a record 40% used an app to make their purchase, NCA said.
Additionally, more American adults now drink specialty coffee than traditional coffee. An all-time of 48% of respondents reported having specialty coffee in the past day, NCA found.
With Americans enjoying more than 500 million cups a day nationwide, coffee is more widely consumed than any other beverage including bottled water, the NCA said.

What’s the deal?
And while coffee remains a daily ritual, it’s getting pricier.
Prices were up 6.1% in August from a year earlier, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Instant coffee rose 11% year over year, while roasted coffee was 4.9% higher, the latest BLS Consumer Price Index data show.
Industry analysts point to a mix of factors, including extreme weather and tight supplies in major growing countries like Brazil and Vietnam. As a result, those higher bean costs are continuing to work their way through the supply chain, according to Reuters.
