American Express announced Oct. 8 its largest Centurion Lounge network expansion to date, spanning four locations, including Newark Liberty International Airport.
The new lounge in Newark airport’s Terminal A will be the largest in AmEx’s Centurion Lounge network, according to the New York-based financial company.
Originally planned for 18,000 square feet, the recent announcement calls for a two-floor, more than 30,000-square-foot space. The lounge is expected to open in 2027.
According to AmEx, the design will draw inspiration from Garden State history, including artwork “representing the state’s long legacy of invention and discovery.”
In the new lounge, American Express card members will find:
- A Blue Roast by American Express Coffee and Wellness Bar – featuring espresso beverages, cold brew and seasonal coffee specialties as well as treats such as smoothies, avocado toast and chia pudding
- Three bars inspired by New Jersey:
- Main Bar – featuring craft cocktails and curated wines
- Specialty Bar – a modern spin on the state’s diner culture
- Pine Barrens-inspired Terrace Bar – offering gelato, Italian pastries and Italian-inspired cocktails “celebrating New Jersey’s Italian heritage”
- Culinary Collective by The Centurion Lounge – featuring dishes created by James Beard Award-winning Resy chefs, including Kwame Onwuachi, Mike Solomonov, Mashama Bailey and Sarah Grueneberg
“With locally-sourced quality food and beverage options and stunning architectural design celebrating New Jersey’s rich history, the new Centurion Lounge builds on the Port Authority’s [of New York and New Jersey] commitment to deliver a world-class guest experience for travelers,” Frank Radics, Newark airport’s general manager, said in a statement.
On the horizon
Audrey Hendley, president of American Express Travel, added, “As the Centurion Lounge Network grows, we’re investing in the lounges our Card Members already know and love while continuing to open new spaces.”
AmEx also has plans to expand and renovate its Centurion Lounges at Philadelphia International Airport and George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. The company will also add a second lounge at London Heathrow Airport.
Newark airport’s $2.7 billion Terminal A opened in 2023 and was recently approved for a $110 million expansion. Additionally, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s EWR Vision Plan will include a new Terminal B and a $3.5 billion AirTrain Newark replacement project.
This summer, British Airways also announced a $15 million project to redevelop its space in Newark’s Terminal B.
