Krispy Kreme is bringing some more sweetness to the New York City area.
As part of a franchise development agreement, Jersey City-based Original Entrepreneurs LLC plans to open 33 Krispy Kreme shops across the region over the next five years.
According to an Oct. 13 news release, the deal includes New Jersey and Long Island. The North Carolina-based chain didn’t announce specific locations or grand opening timelines.
A company spokesperson declined to offer additional information on the deal with Original Entrepreneurs.
Founded in 1937, Krispy Kreme bills itself as the home of the Original Glazed Doughnut. It’s also considered one of the most beloved and well-known sweet treat brands in the world. In addition to partnerships with leading retailers and growing digital business, Krispy Kreme has a global network of fresh doughnut shops that spans 40 countries. That includes 361 locations in the U.S.
Within New Jersey, Krispy Kreme has stores in Collingswood, East Rutherford, Jersey City, Paramus, Lakewood and Springfield.
Its New York City footprint of 11 shops consists of seven sites in Manhattan, two in the Bronx, one in Queens and one in Staten Island.
The hole approach
A longtime Krispy Kreme franchisee, Original Entrepreneurs currently operates 12 outposts in New Jersey and New York.
The group started with the brand in 2017 when it opened a location in downtown Jersey City. Its Krispy Kreme portfolio now includes Springfield, East Rutherford, Paramus and Lakewood, as well as seven stores in New York.
Original Entrepreneurs co-Principal John Mondry said, “We look forward to building on that relationship and continuing to expand Krispy Kreme’s presence across the New York metro area.” And Original Entrepreneurs co-Principal Karl Halligan added, “We’re proud of our long-standing relationship with Krispy Kreme and confident in the strength of the brand.”
Meanwhile, Krispy Kreme CEO Josh Charlesworth said the chain is “pleased to continue growing with Original Entrepreneurs.”
“This development agreement reflects our focus on capital-light franchise growth and enables us to expand with an operator that has deep expertise building and operating Krispy Kreme shops in a competitive market,” he said.
Krispy Kreme’s planned New York City area expansion comes as the chain tries to turn around its business following the July 2025 collapse of a partnership with McDonalds. The deal would have brought Krispy Kreme doughnuts to about 2,400 McDonald’s restaurants across the U.S. Since then, Krispy Kreme has focused on cutting costs, closing underperforming locations and expanding through franchising to reduce debt and improve profitability.
For the latest quarter ending June 28, revenue fell 12.8% to $331 million, while net loss narrowed to $19.8 million from $441.1 million a year earlier.
